Equine Affaire In Mass. this month
« on: November 12, 2022, 07:53:32 am »

I'm surprised that there are no gaited breeds being demo-ed at this big event.
Isn't there a New England gaited association?

There used to be some Icelandics in Vermont (I think). However, Equine Affaire does not make it easy for people to take horses. They charge a lot and unless they schedule this event differently from the OH EA, you don't get many chances to demo your breed.

A mare I owned was in it for several years after I sold her. She’s registered 4 ways and gaited.

People should complain or offer suggestions to make positive changes.

The following are just MY ideas on Equine Affaire.
First it's run it's course.  It is way too expensive to appear.  The state of Mass has over the top health papers needed and added on top of those are the venue rules.  Attendance has dropped off as have the number of vendors.

Duncan and I attended for 4 or 5 years as did a couple of other members of this board.

But when you are scheduled for a breed demo at 9 am on Thursday morning, unless it's Veterans Day you are riding to a mostly empty arena no matter which ring you are in.  To have an area to talk to people and promote up close costs tons and tons of money.

The number of breed clubs is down as there were multiple demo times for most of the breeds attending.  It used to be that we had to fight for demo time.

It used to be you could get deals but not so much any more.

Also many of the breed groups are no longer active.
There are not a lot of gaited groups that are active either.

Many of the breed clubs are way too political and only the favored few get to go with their horses.

As for me we had 3 major events in 4
weeks both horses and people need the winter off.  I am blessed to be with the Premier Fresian trainer in the North East and folks know where to find him.

Ok I'm done.

Ditto just about all of what Slamduncan said. EA OH takes place in April and I think they had record crowds this year. I can see where people are done with this kind of thing in Nov, but in April, it's something to look forward to.

I agree with Stablemind.  After the winter folks want to get out and about.  November not so much.

I am surprised that they has record crowds..I was there all 4 days and I didn't think it was very crowded...
And the number of vendors way way down.

We show our Standardbreds there..and I think there were other gaited breeds (TWH and others) there also.
