Cross Under Bridle vs Sidepull
« on: February 17, 2014, 01:43:32 pm »

I know there are many that have spoken on why they do not like the cross under design and prefer the direct action of a side pull bridle instead. I'm curious to hear if anyone has had the opposite reaction; horses that clearly preferred to be ridden in the cross under style bridle instead of a side pull?

Thank you!

I've only used side pulls, but my question would be, does the horse really prefer the cross-under design or does he/she simply respond quicker to the stronger cue? In other words, how do you know the horse prefers it?

Yes, that was to be my next question, how did you come to the opinion that the horse preferred that action.

I looked at a cross under at Midwest last year and this one looked kind of complicated to get on - so I passed and went with the halter-like side pull - I like easy. ;D

Well there's the indian bosal types that only criss cross under the chin.  Then there's the leverage types like the Dr Cook that go all the way up over the poll and apply pressure at the pressure point behind the ears.

Between indian bosal type and sidepull, I haven't had a horse care either way.  I've never tried the over the poll crossover type though because I think they have too much potential for injury.  And if you read reviews on those, horses either hate them or do fine.. if they hate them they keep dropping their head to get away from the pressure is the most common response.
