Shadowfax - my new colt project
«

Hello,
I have a colt who just turned 2. He currently measures about 14.2 - his dam is 15.2 or 3 and sire is 15.1. Any guesses on his height at maturity?
Looking forward to starting him in the round pen once the ground dries up.

Oh wow, Kysa, if he gets that tall husband Ed will be so happy (he's 6 ft 4). I will have to let you know how tall he grows. I am hoping for the 15 hand range since I am 5 ft 3. He will have to learn to sidle up to mounting blocks either way!

I'll guess 15 to 15.1 hands. He is a cutie.

If he just turned two, and he is 14.2, I will say he has at LEAST on more hand to go, maybe more. Hence my guess of 16 hands.
True story. I bought a very nice young saddlebred, age 2.5. He was 14.1 hands, and the breeders promised he would stay short. Dam was 13.3, sire 15.1. I looked at both the dam and sire. They were right there on the property. By the time he was 6, Willie was 16 hands. I am 5’4”. He was way too tall for me.

That's a crazy tale about Willie growing so tall - you never know for sure but it is fun to guess. Thanks Judy - I think he's cute too. I was hoping since he's stocky and mature looking for his age maybe he wouldn't sprout up so much more.

C'mon over Cyd and get a dose of colt starting! He's coming along nicely in the round pen - inside turns, desensitizing to stick and string, and yielding hindquarters to pressure.

All horses long bones quit growing at 2 years old. Only place to grow now is his topline.
I would guess he may mature out to be 14.3HH - 14.3 ½"HH
I had a horse who was 14.2HH at a yearling and he finished at 15.3HH. QH
I had another horse who was 14.0 ½"HH at a 2 year old and he finished at 14.2 ½" HH. His string measure thingy said he was going to mature to 15.2HH. He passed away in 2012 as a 15 yr old and he was still 14.2 ½"HH. Arab
A friend of mine her yearling foals are 16HH at yearlings. They mature to 17.1HH + depending on how fast those long bones grew until 2 years old. Warmbloods.
Only DNA and food will tell how tall he will get. ie a stunted horse due to lack of food will typically grow less than what their DNA says.

He's a Rocky Mountain - he looks way more mature than our other two did at 2 - they are Walker type Spotted Saddle. He's on the tubby side and is a very easy keeper - so will have to be careful about that.

Wow, he will probably reach at least 15 hands or more. I raise rockies and normally mine aren't 14-2 at 2. They tend to get their growth later.
Pretty boy
