About the horses we rode in Iceland - those guys were all in fighting form, no extra fat anywhere, and they did all take the same size saddle. It might be safe to say IsHestar selects the ones with ideal backs for their tours because a horse needing a specific saddle would complicate the routine every time they started out or changed horses. But I remember seeing a pair of horses in a big pasture that obviously weren't getting much exercise and they were very, very round.

Thank you all for the great input and feedback on saddles for an Icelandic!  I haven't been logged in for quite some time, but enjoyed reading the replies and especially the picture of the whiter tracings.  I am still riding in my Stubben and undecided about what kind of a trail saddle I would like - have been leaning towards the crest ridge still. My Icelandic is very wide and very round with "mutton-withers". He is the only Icelandic I have ever had, so I don't really have anything to compare him to, although the other two the previous owner had were built similarily, as are his parents, which I have seen pictures of.  My Icelandic was born in the U.S., but I believe both parents were from Iceland.
