What's your favorite cinch?
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:09:04 am »

Seeing as I have to buy a new cinch I thought I would ask before doing so.  What's your favorite?

I currently have a mohair cinch.  I'm a trail rider, if that makes a difference ;)

Mohair for the momma. She's sensitive and white.  Sheepskin covers on rings.  And neoprene on others .
I have a tuffy felt that is over 10 years old and still like new. Has really held up well.
All have stainless hardware.  I wouldn't have one without stainless.

I have used mohair and neoprene. I like the neoprene since it is easy to clean but I did have one gall a horse once. Young horse on a longer rougher mountain ride than she was used to. Any cinch might have left a rub. The mohair seems to be working well but I'm not sure about cleaning them.

I have to say, both as a horse owner and a tack store owner, it really depends on the horse.

Many many of my customers like neoprene, and many horses go well in them.  But I have two that rub and gall with neoprene.  Those two get woolback cinches.
I prefer the roper style, broader in the center, to the straight cinches.  Mostly because it spreads out the pressure more.  All of my horses have cinches with elastic ends so they can breath a bit.

But honestly, I carry a huge variety because it is so individual, both the horse and the rider.

And here is a photo I have up in the store to help with girth length.

I am looking for a Toklat woolback western cinch if anyone has one for sale.  It has to be short though.  I have the English style and it is my favorite.

I use and really like the wool back cinches made by Running Bear. Similar to Toklat. I have three of them. (None for sale!)

Running Bear Site

She calls hers wool fleece sport girths. I see she also sells Toklat. Hers are on close-out. Hmmm. Maybe I need another one before they are gone.

Pam,
I carry Triple E woolback cinches in both western and endurance.  In the store I carry down to 28 inches, but I can special order smaller than that.  Same woolback fleece as Toklat, of which I am also a dealer.

I am changing my English rigging on Luna to western.  I will still do the v rigging.  Should I go shorter, longer or stay the same?  Sorry Cashela for hijacking this.  Just one question.

Thanks to Kysa's recommendation, I can endorse the endurance Triple E wool-back. I use billet converters on my western saddle. The wool-back has elastic on both sides, great roller buckles, easy on the hands, even pressure on both sides. The Triple E neoprene has elastic on only one side.

I second the Running Bear cinches.  They are awesome.  If they get dirty, pop them in the washer and they look brand new.  Genuine wool fleece and the elastic ends make them very comfy for the horse.

I've found the opposite......my horses did better with smooth neoprene girths.......not the nubby kind.  We have used mohair, string, leather and neoprene.  Like neoprene the best. Since we were usually riding in rough and wet conditions the neoprene could be washed off and was good as new.  Fabric and padded girths would collect mud, dirt, stickers and burrs.
