Stephanie, that is a very exciting story!  Didn't realize you had to go so far to find him.  Sounds like you gave him an awesome test ride, if I need to buy another horse, I will send you to do the test riding for me!  We seem to like the same type of horse.
Glad Gus has settled in so quickly, that's always a good sign.   He'll probably be fine in the winter, since he is at your house now.  My daughter moved her horse a number of years ago from Ohio, where yes it gets below freezing here, to Minnesota, about an hour and a half from Fargo, ND.  It gets super cold there, -30 or worse in the winter, that horse did just fine and never needed a blanket.
Wishing you many happy trails with Gus, you deserve them.

The color is Sabino... I think Bay Sabino.
He is cute as he can be. Congratulations.  I think you could register him Spotted Saddle Horse with gait because he has white spots above his knee

Thanks everybody!

I know he's a sabino but bay sabino doesn't sound right? He's mostly white/grey and a dark grey in the winter, so I'm not entirely sure what his color is?

My plan is to register him with TWHBEA, SSH, and Racking. The guy I bought him from, bought Gus as a 3 year old from his friends who owned his sire and dam, so I can get their signatures to register him. Then once he's registered TWHBEA, I can branch out from there. :)

Yes I debated Bay, because of his dark roots, or chestnut. Since you have him in real life and don't think the bay works, then it is probably Chestnut.  :D

Can you explain this to me? :) I'm a little confused! lol I thought a chestnut horse would be red/brown, but since Gus is white/grey I'm a little confused as to how he could be a chestnut sabino?

His fur is kind of roany - he's white but close up he looks almost feabitten? Is that the chestnut?

Here's a few closeup's of his fur: https://i.imgur.com/3tDtR3s.jpg, https://i.imgur.com/Kgb00P4.jpg, https://i.imgur.com/481jdJD.jpg

I'm certainly no color expert, lol! It took me years to figure out what Sol and CJ were but luckily I was able to DNA test and figure that out - but Gus seems a lot more challenging (to me!) to figure out.

I don't think he's gray, that isn't really a color unless they are born solid and go white as they age. Unless he is going whiter every year, he isn't a grey. I think he just looks grey because of the roaning from the sabino.  There are basically 2 colors  black and red and their various colors that result from modifying genes. .  So if he was grey he would still be a base color that is modified.. black or red.  http://www.animalgenetics.us/Equine/Coat_Color/Red_Black_Factor.asp
explains it ...

Ah, that makes sense. I don't think he's a grey either. It does seem like he is some kind of roan sabino.

I can DNA test for sabino but I cannot for roan. I can also DNA test for black or red.

The roaning is part of the Sabino effect.  A DNA test would be interesting.

I'm going to get one done! For a $150 I can get a full color and pattern panel workup done. So I plan to do that soon. :)

Sounds like an awesome horse. May need to get previous owner's name when we start looking!
