Having fun teaching a two year old mare.
« on: May 11, 2018, 06:57:00 pm »

Well, I weaned my now two year old MFT mare(Midnight Rendezvous, barn name Kate) a couple of months ago by selling the mom. The breeder who bought her(again) took her a couple of hours north back to his farm. Since then she has bonded to me big time. She is so friendly, willing and curious! She always comes trotting up to the fence to greet me. Makes my heart sing! She loves to play with everything and dig holes. So when I introduce things like the tarp, a rain coat, hose, water coming out of the hose, flymask, etc., I let her mouth it and shake it first. Then she accepts it as non-threatening and isn't afraid of it. She learns SO fast too. Three sessions on backing up and she has it down. We got her used to her fly mask in less than a half hour. I left it on her after plenty of touch then retreat and she didn't object to wearing it for the afternoon. She loves her grooming sessions too. I need to work on making her understand to not crowd me though.
All in all, this has been a positive experience so far.

Awesome! She sounds like a great little filly. She's learning fast, she's willing -AND it sounds like she has a good connection with you! Can't ask for better than that! Any pictures?

Am working on ground control and teaching her to respect my personal space. Am watching lots of youtube videos about it.

Kate learned that a plastic bag tied to the end of a stick is very effective at keeping her shoulder away from me when she is moving around me.

HaHa--I remember doing that with my gelding when he was young. You would have thought there was a dragon on the end of the stick instead of a plastic bag!

Sorry-haven't updated in a while. We have been making alot of slow progress in backing up by shaking her lead rope and using the bag on a stick. She carefully backs over a couple of ground poles too. This is all useful for backing out of a TRAILER!! The past two lessons her trainer has been using her curiosity to check out my trailer. Last week she walked right in then came right out. At least she went in. Then there was lots of going in half-way then stepping back out. She got rewards for those efforts. Trailer is not scary she found. Today she went partially in about 20 times then went totally in a couple of times and stood in there checking out the area in there. Then she backed out carefully and slowly. More rewards! We called that good for today then went exploring out front half way down the driveway so she could see & hear vehicles going by on the street. That was exciting and scary. She did lots of circles, stopping and staring. We will do that more to get her exposed to more things. She did well. We will explore more in the next couple of weeks until our next lesson.  I am so pleased with seeing her progress. Kate is almost 2 1/2 now. She thinks about what she is doing and tries to understand the sights and sounds around her. It makes me feel so good to see her learning about her environment and seeing her getting calmer after she gets exposed to things.

Making more progress....Kate gets in & out of the trailer finally. Now we have to work on teaching her to stay in it.
She is such a joy to work with!

After doing a warm up in the arena backing up,sidepassing, leading we are working on desensitizing to traffic sights and sounds.  She leads quietly but alertly down the driveway. We go past the trees so she can see the cars going by at 55 mph. We are about 250 feet back. She gets quite upset and circles me at the end of the leadrope trotting very fast and is hard to stop. I did this on a Sunday morning thinking that there wouldn't be much traffic. But there was more than I expected. I got so dizzy spinning around! After about 5 minutes we headed back to the barn. It was a short lesson. I will have to do this more.
The cars go by so fast I don't think she can actually see them well. She hears the sounds and that makes her panic.

Is there any way you can set up a small pen near enough the highway that she can clearly see it and the traffic?  Then leave her with food and just let her get used to the traffic.  My pasture borders a highway, so my horses are all pretty much traffic safe just from their space.

KCKC- I will try that. My 31 yo gelding is pretty sedate.

KysaSD- Unfortunately I don't have a round pen or any way to fence in any of my front field.

Thanks for the suggestions though.
