Savanah's surgery did not turn out well
« on: January 12, 2018, 09:07:23 am »

The surgery on my wife's mare Savanah did not turn out well at all.
They found the clot was actually larger than expected , had organized ,
and calcified. They were not able t o get any out. They injected TPA
( a clot dissolving drug ) directly into the clot . An ultra sound 2 days
later showed little to no reaction.

Needles to say we are beyond devastated. She is recovering well with
a few very minor complications. The staff and Doctors at CSU have
been phenomenal . The facility is spectacular and would put most
human hospitals to shame.

They are working on some alternative drug related solutions to help
her out and continue a nice healthy life. Don't know if she will be able
to be ridden again , but that's ok with us as long as she is healthy
and comfortable. Savanah has a forever home with us.

Finally , it appears her body is adjusting and looking for alternative
ways to get blood into that part of her body. This is not unusual apparently
as smaller veins and arteries actually get larger and thicker. Increases
blood flow to blocked area. Layman's terms water always runs down hill

Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts

Oh I'm so sorry - any hope that clot dissolving medicine may work in a bit more time?   And hey, maybe they will come up with another plan?

I know you were hoping for a much better outcome.  Sometimes all we can do is try and hope/pray for the best.

I am so sorry.  BUT she is still with you and hopefully her body will adjust and she'll live a long life.

I am so sorry.  Keep researching and asking questions.

When the vet gave the horse in my avatar "six months or a little more", I started asking questions, looking and thinking outside the box.  I did lose him eventually but I was able to give him two more years (on top of that six months) of quality life.

His was something completely unrelated to your wife's horse, my point is keep looking and digging as you never know what you might stumble across or what new innovative treatment might come to the forefront.

Keep in touch with the professionals who have worked with you thru this process:)

Wishing you the very best and wishing Savanah a healthy life long past the expected:)

Thanks everyone. We will continue to do everything we can and explore every
avenue possible for Savanah. Dr Thal , the staff at CSU , and Dr Dianna
DeBlanc ( our everyday vet ) have all said they would offer any help and
treatment they can. A little hope is better than none at all.

I was so sorry to read this. I really admire you for trying so hard to help Savannah and hope this isn't your last recourse.

Wow- calcified clot. That must be the body's way to deal with something like that. I bet that will go into the research journals.
So sorry it had to be difficult to treat. But as you see, the circulatory system is working on bypassing the spot.
Praying that Savannah recovers and can be useful in the future. Prayers for you both, too, as you deal with this situation.

Oh, sorry I did not see this before asking about her on other post. I agree, keep searching. Where there's life, there's hope. I put one down too soon without trying harder. Kicking myself still.
