Horse Treat & Pellet Ball Feeder Toy?
« on: December 29, 2017, 08:16:50 am »

I've been trying to figure out how to get our pony a slow feed option on pellets only.  My work has picked up my travel time which means that too many days there isn't someone home to feed him midday.  The  auto feeders are so expensive, I just can't swing them.

I found this one on riding warehouse.  http://www.ridingwarehouse.com/Shires_Horse_Treat__Pellet_Ball_Feeder_Toy/descpage-HBF.html

With the level of snow on the ground, I doubt it'll be very effective at the moment, but I thought it would be worth a try.  Has any one used a pellet ball for a horse?

could you hang it?  does he need pellets?  You couldn't do a small holed hay net or slow hay feeder?

Unfortunately, he has no teeth left.  I'm too worried about him choking to give him any hay.  He spits out giant wads when he gets ahold of anything longer than an inch or so...even grass.

oh yeah, I get that... my mare quids too ...she is doing pretty well on chaffhaye but that might be too much for one that is toothless.   A toy is a great idea.  instead of looking at horse feeders , look at battery operated dog food feeders.   You'd just have to set it up so that it drops the food maybe through a funnel or something so he can't reach the actual feeder ??  I have one somewhere that I used for awhile.  I put it on the deck balcony and it sprayed the food out into the yard for the minpins to "hunt" for ...  maybe you could use something like that?

Thanks for the tip on the dog feeders!  Those look like they should work well.

Can you hire someone to feed him midday?
