Prayers for my Wife's horse
« on: December 28, 2017, 08:06:36 am »

Debra's 12 year old black Missouri Fox Trotter mare is having experimental surgery Wednesday
January 10th. She has have a golf ball size tumor in her Iliac artery ( right hind quarter ).
We'll be bringing her up to Colorado State University Veterinary School next Saturday.

Savanah Rose is my wife's forever heart horse. All your prayers for a great outcome
and recovery would be appreciated.

Thanks
Bill

I am so sorry...and yes I do know what it is like to face this sort of thing.
I pray for skilled surgeons and a good recovery.

Thanks so much for the early prayers.

Savanah has the arterial condition  Aorta-Iliac Thrombosis. It is a very rare
diagnosed condition. She is perfectly sound walking and doing various lameness
checks. Once she starts gaiting or cantering for about 10 minutes , she pulls up lame,
her right hind quarter starts to spasm , and beaks out into a pronounced sweat. 5 to 10 minutes
later she is perfectly normal as if nothing happened. The clot cuts off the increased
blood at increased work and that is what causes the symptoms.

Outlook for this historically is not good. Muscle atrophy to the point of loss of use
of leg or a piece of the clot breaking off and going into the heart or brain.

The catheter surgery is a procedure they've done to horses in their jugular to remove
clots in the neck , and also in cats in same location as Savanah. They have never
tried it on horse to that location , but feel it will work well depending on the clot
itself , how is attached , and how much they can remove.

It is pretty ground breaking surgery and we hope it helps her and many more
horses in the future.

Thanks again for your prayers

My horse became very ill a little over a week ago, spent several days at Equine Specialty Hospital and now seems to be on the mend. I'm so very grateful for the people who prayed for him, I'm glad to do the same for Debra's mare.

We got very lucky with the diagnosis. Dr Doug Thal's clinic in Santa Fe , NM
is less than an hour from where we live. After contacting him we brought
her up to his clinic for an exam. He spent about 6 hours doing numerous tests
and blood work and could not narrow down what was wrong. He called that
night and said he had an idea what she might have , and had also consulted
with other vets around the country including internationally known equine
neuromuscular specialist Dr Mary Anne Valberg.

They confirmed she probably had Aorta-Iliac Thrombosis. We took her back
the next day for a deep ultrasound and he found the clot. It was an incredible
diagnosis on his part.

Wow! Amazing news. How will they go about dissolving the clot?
