End of an Era
« on: December 01, 2017, 10:38:22 am »

This morning, I laid Shay to rest, the Standarbred in my profile picture.  I have suspected she was going blind for a at least a few months, but when the vet came out yesterday, he said her pupils did not even track light anymore.  No wonder she has been agitated.  I cannot guarantee that she would not run into a fence in her agitation, so we decided now was the time.

Last summer I rode her in the Black Hills.  Tough challenging trails.  I did think her approach to water crossings odd, but she went everywhere I pointed here.  I now realize she was probably mostly blind then.

This photo is how I want to Remember her.

End of an Era is correct.   I'm so sorry--   What a great mare and you gave her a great life.
She will be one of the non replaceable horses.

Having had my share of the days that saying "goodbye" was the only humane option, I understand the pain that goes with making that kind of decision.  Her story is amazing and will live on long past her physical body.

Kysa,
I was so sorry to hear about the loss of Shay. I know she had a special place in your heart and was a good horse.......I have lost three aged geldings in the past few years and it never gets any easier.  I am glad she had you to help her over the rainbow bridge, and I am glad that the decision came now and she did not have to deal with the harsh winter. Take care :'(

Oh, Kysa! I am sorry you had to lay Shay to rest. Never an easy decision, but such a considerate one. Run free, sweet girl!

Oh Kysa there are just NO words.  Thoughts and prayers and I would like to think she is over the bridge running free with Duncan.

So sorry to hear that.  You did the right thing for Shay, but I know how hard it is on the person.  Hugs.

I'm so sorry Kysa. She was an amazing horse and gave so many people the ride of their life. You were both very lucky to have each other.
