Jackson Falls, Shawnee Forest
« on: November 25, 2017, 03:46:59 pm »

Here are a few pictures from today's ride with Loretta. We rode the Jackson Falls area in the Shawnee Forest of southern Illinois. The trails were covered with leaves, making it especially challenging. But, what a delightful day! Low 60's and sunny. Lots of people taking advantage of the forest. We saw a great many rock climbers, including the cutest rock climber I've ever seen! Enjoy...

To get to the main trail, you must go over or under the railroad tracks. Best to time this when there is no train coming!

On the other side of the tracks, there's a place to water the horses before getting into the big rocks.

Getting into the big rocks.

We can do that. This is our favorite ride. It is not long, but is pretty mentally taxing on the horses. In June the trails won’t be leaf-covered which will be nice. To ride these trails we need to trailer to a parking area at the trail head. Not far at all, but too far to ride there from our camp.

What's the issue with the leaves? Just that the trails are slick?

Not slick, but nearly invisible! The trails are narrow with lots of oddly shaped rocks. Horses need to pick their way carefully in spots. That is hard to do when you can't see your footing. This is not typical of all trails in the Shawnee. But, in the Jackson Falls area the trails are that way. And there are times you just cannot see them to know where to go! I will try to find some pictures to illustrate this.

Yes, mentally taxing on the horses. We only rode about three hours, but they were pretty tired at the end of it. Still, one of the best rides in a long time. Such a nice day and bright sun! Glad you like the pictures. I love taking them!

This sounds like most of the trails we ride on, especially this time of year. It doesn't seem to tax our horses mentally and I'm sure it's because they're so used to it. For us, a trail that's not rocky and full of obstacles is a rare treat.

I also hope to meet you on the Shawnee trails in June.  :)
