well, if you think about it there are a lot of issues that affect horses and their eating habits.  if they have 24/7 hay (mine do) they may also need lots of area (or pasture mazes) to keep them active.  the 24/7 eating habit "in nature" would encompass them walking for acres and acres to get their food.  that is different than being in a paddock and having food 24/7.  I still think they need slow feeders and need to eat all day if they want to but if a horse is over weight or IR then there are other issues to consider.  It would be perfect if the hay could be checked or if IR hay could be purchased so these horses could eat all day.  I really think if allowed to have all they want to eat every day for months they would gradually stop being piglets.  that being said, if they are in a small paddock they may eat because they are bored.
