5 years in the planning, 1.5 years in the building
« on: November 03, 2015, 03:29:55 pm »

But finally finally my covered riding arena is mostly done.  Still need electricity and lights, but the builder is done.
Outside as it was being built.

Inside, looking at the pens.

Eventual plan is a 12 foot aisle for storage, 4 12x12 stalls, then the rest is 60 by 120, the arena.

My granddaughters have tried it out and loved it!

Melody on Molly and the Neighbor girl on Belle.

Harmony on Belle

And with that....I have created a monster.  Melody got off the school bus yesterday and came running into the store.
Nana, Nana, can I ride Molly in the arena.  We didn't have much light left, but I let her.
My timid rider is long gone.  I don't think she an Molly walked for a minute total.  It was racking, right up to speed racking!

I finally told her she needed to give David a ride, then quit.  It was pretty dark by then, but she is a good enough rider to have a kid on with her.

I need bigger and more permanent tack storage, but I thought this was pretty cute.
1950s freight train box.

Made a rack to go inside.

Works pretty good for the 10 inch kid saddles and their helmets.

Oh Yes, Yes, I was totally impressed... did it spray automatically because I have one horse that would "die" everytime we went by it  :-)

Yesterday was the perfect use of the new arena.  My brother is hear and his youngest three children wanted to ride.  I have three perfect ponies for this, and the arena was quiet, and not windy.
Kyle, 13, and Kolby, 11, had never taken the reins become, just had a pony ride or two.  I put them on Molly and Belle.  At first, Kolby did not want me to let Bell of the lead rope.  But after 4 times around the arena, along with instruction and working the reins and legs cues, I just walked away.  He did fine, and Belle is a very good kid horse.  Kyle was braver and was loose from the beginning.
Then I put Eva, 15, on Hannah.  She has ridden a bit before, but not much.  After they all got the hang of just walking around, turning, backing, stopping, I put out some fly spray bottles and asked them to do figure eights.  Then I drug out a fence post and had them step over it.  I asked them to go different directions so the horses were not just following each other.

The next thing I knew, they were flying around the arena, and Kolby was cantering.....yes, the kid who an hour previous would not come off the lead line.

So, with just a bit mor instruction and practice, I let them outside into the wide world.  They rode around the lanes we have on the farm.  All in all, a great time, and those kids are now pretty good riders.  I am certain they will ride horses at Christmas if the weather is not too cold.

Hard to imagine Kysa is riding in an indoor arena, that's so cool.  You will so enjoy it this winter, I'm looking forward to having the indoor again.  Last year I wasn't in any condition to use it.  Congrats and great job!
