Best product for heating 80 gallon trough?
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:01:17 am »

As the subject states, I'm looking for a tank defroster to make sure fresh water is available to my girls at all times this winter.  What do you guys use?

Thank you!

I use a de-icer that fits through the drain plug.  The horses cannot get at it and pull it out like the floating kind.

We have 100 gallon water trough and use the same one Judy linked to.  Works great and is pretty energy efficient

I got the units and installed them.  They work great!  Thank you so much for the help!

Keep an eye on the unit, we're on the 2nd season with ours and it's still going strong, but I've read they are good for about 3 or 4 seasons, and no more...

Of course they use a decent amount of power, but so far we've been happy with them.

While next at tractor supply, get the brass quick disconnects as well for your garden hose... makes flopping on a garden hose quickly in the cold easy... and off again to get it back into the warm to keep it from freezing.  Helps to get a decent heavy duty 1" real rubber hose as well.

we put foil/bubble/foil insulation around our trough.
Next we placed a 2 inch thick piece of insulation under the trough.
Last we doubled up insulation board and duck taped all four edges and
we use this a the top for the torugh.  we close the top at night and we
use bungee cords to keep the top in place.

Now the trough heater is only plugged in when our horses are out of the
barn, but they seem to enjoy the warmer water.
