For a feed additive, my favorite is Next Level (liquid form but it also comes in pellets I think).  But I've been told if you have a horse you may even suspect might lean towards insulin resistance, they should  not  be given glucosomine, just MSM.

MSM is also a no go for a horse that is IR.   Chondroitin and HA is ok.  I used Lubrisyn for the little Paso I had when he was showing some signs of arthritis in his hocks and he done really well.  It was expensive, but after the loading dose a large bottle lasted him for nearly a year.  Lubrisyn is HA.

Is the horse older and you want to just give a good supplement to help prevent issues? We have our older guys on CJ platinum performance.

It is for Cheyenne...she is 16 this year. The other day I went to get her to take her for a ride and she was laying down having a nap. When I got her up, she sort of limped a bit on her one back leg for a few steps, then seemed fine, like she was just stiff.  It reminded me of how I feel with my arthritis when I stand up and try to walk after sitting awhile. It takes me a bit to get the old body straightened out to a proper upright position. I have also suspected she has had something going on in that same leg for a couple/few years now. I thought maybe there was something I could add to her feed once a day that may be beneficial to her for those reasons.

I don't know if it would be cost prohibitive to ship but I do like platinum performance supplements. Line is developed by vet clinic that is world renowned. CJ formula has our 20year olds moving the same as they always have. I feed skin and allergy from them to my mare that has a reaction to fly bites. Seems to help.

Thanks 2gaits. WOW, they sure don;t give that stuff away, do they!!  ;)  It was noted previously in this thread that MSM and Glucosamine may not be good for horses that IR may even be SUSPECTED in, and that supplement has both so not sure about it.  I did have Cheyenne tested for it a couple of summers ago, and hers were within normal range at that time though.

This is from Dr. Kellon as to glucosamine:

INTRAVENOUS glucosamine definitely produces insulin resistance. The

bulk of the human and animal (none horse) oral glucosamine studies

find no effect, even in diabetic or insulin resistant individuals.

Bottom line with glucosamine is caution. If you are already using it

and have no problems with it, no need to stop but good idea to keep

an eye on the insulins and glucose every few months to look for

unexplained worsening. If you haven't used it before but need to (it

is a great joint supplement, and inexpensive compared to others),

observe carefully, stop at any sign of unexplained hoof soreness, and

check insulin/glucose every few months.

So basically you can try it and just watch your mare closely for any signs mentioned in the above.

This on MSM:

MSM effects on other minerals are a big unknown. High sulfur intakes

can depress selenium and copper absorption. If your horse has a

strongly positive reaction to it, it's certainly better than

something like bute but would make sure trace minerals are tightly

balanced and keep an eye on blood selenium levels. If they're not

where they should be with appropriate supplementation, you'll need to

address that.

On the glucosamine I believe it depends on the horse, seems some do fine others show a reaction to it from the IR if they have it.   You could try one of the supplements with that in it and see how your mare does.  My vet recommended Cosequin for my little Paso since he said it was, I think he said proven, to work compared to the others.  I used it for a while and my little Paso done fine, but the glucosamine in it is the reason I went to Lubrisyn or HA since Paso's are one of the poster childs for IR.

Mona
I like the products from www.springtimeinc.com.
I've also used and like Corta-Flx which comes in pellets or liquid and they do have HA as a choice in one of their products.

Thanks everyone.  In googling Legend, I came across this page and liked that it gave a comparison. I think if anything, I'd like to try to the Adequan IM.
