How to clean sheepskin saddle covers?
« on: August 17, 2014, 05:46:09 pm »

I have an equine comfort products sheepskin seat cover for my western saddle. I haven't used it in a long time and its gotten dusty and gross. I don't think I can just throw it in the washer can I? Whats the best way to clean genuine sheepskin?

I put mine in the washer on delicate and hang to dry.  Use very little soap

In the washing machine, yes. I have a front loader which is gentle enough even on the sturdy cycle.

Woolite, gentle or the handwash cycle.

Before you wash use a wire dog brush.  Wash the pad, shake it ( like a rug), then place it out of the sun where it can dry completely 100%.  When completely dry, shake it a couple times, then use the wire dog brush.

I usually dry in the house on a clothes drying rack, where it is dryer than the 98% humidity outside right now.

I do this with synthetic and wool.  If it is fluffy, it gets washed and dried and brushed all the same.  Makes it look new again.

I use the wire dog to fluff also when it just needs fluffing.  Makes it look new and fluffy.
